ATDNET SC2000 DEMONSTRATION

The ATDnet agencies in partnership with Verizon, Qwest, SGI and Marconi are demonstrating several greater-than-Gbps applications "firsts" between Washington, D.C. and the Super Computing 2000 Exhibition at the Dallas Convention Center. One of the applications is the first long distance demonstration of uncompressed Progressive HDTV video conferencing. This two-way interaction over the ATDnet's ATM and optical network layers extended via a 2.5 Gbps Qwest connection from Dallas, Texas to Washington, DC and Verizon links in Washington, DC is in full Progressive HD quality with zero frames of latency. This network connection is also being used to demonstrate uncompressed streaming of Progressive HDTV programming, including recorded ABC Network material and computer visualization. The Progressive HD video is displayed in the Qwest, NCO, Marconi, and SGI booths. Another application being demonstrated is beyond Gbps computer-to-computer network connectivity used for rapid remote browsing of terabyte data sets. An OC-48c ATM connection to the SGI booth will be utilized to demonstrate the first extension of a Gigabyte Systems Network (GSN) high performance computer interface outside of the computer room and beyond the normal 40-meter operating limit. This Gbps+ computer-to-computer network connection will allow immediate random interactive browsing of terabytes of uncompressed Progressive HDTV motion imagery files stored at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC. Extension of the ATDnet to Dallas also provides network access to the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation's digital video database.

Major milestones and accomplishments

Technology enablers for supercomputing:

  • Gigabit+ computer-to-computer Wide Area Network communications
    • Extension of GSN over ATM; interim Gigabyte ATM Network Adapter (iGANA)
    • Rapid remote interactive browsing of terabyte data sets; Progressive HD motion imagery stored on-line in DC
  • Gigabit+ real-time bit streams over the Wide Area Network
    • Two-way 1.5 Gbps uncompressed Progressive HDTV sensor or display streams

Sponsors: The Department of Defense's ATDnet (NRL, NSA, NASA, DARPA, DISA, DIA) in partnership with Verizon, Qwest, SGI, Marconi, and the Visual History Foundation
