Overview:

The Legacy Experiment is on on-going experiment which will not conclude with this first set of experiments, but continue as new standards are introduced. Load capacity and packet delays as well as interoperability between ATM network devices and legacy FDDI/ethernet routers where tested as part of the first experiment phase. Following experiments will test LAN emulation, both standards based and proprietary, and LANE's ability to support legacy LAN networks which carry IPX LAN traffic.

Purpose:

This experiment tested connectivity between ATM devices and ethernet/FDDI devices. Primary concern for conducting this experiment was to study load capacity and packet delays which maybe seen when interconnecting FDDI/ethernet network devices to ATM devices. Description of Experiment:

This experiment consist of two SparcStations, several ethernet/FDDI routers and 2 Fore System LAX-20s. Each of the LAX-20s where configured with 1 ATM, 1 FDDI DAS and 4 ethernet. The routers used where Network System 6600, CISCO AGS and 3Com NetBuilder II. All the routers where configured with at least 1 FDDI DAS and1 ethernet interface. The routers where interconnected with each other and LAX-20s through their respected FDDI DAS interfaces. A portion of the experiment was conducted with each of the LAX-20s interconnected through their respected ATM interfaces. The two SparcStations, a S1000 and Sparc10, where connected to the test network router's ethernet interfaces. Test data used in the experiment consist of one 40Mbyte file.
