The Future of the Internet

Derek McGinty reported on Friday May 26,  2000 @ 11:00 p.m. news:

Anchor Melissa McDermott:   FOR THOSE OF YOU SITTING AT HOME FRUSTRATED WITH THAT SLOW 56-K MODEM....OR EVEN RACING ALONG WITH A DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE OR CABLE MODEM....THE REALITY IS... THAT WILL ALL BE CHANGING. NEWS SEVEN'S DEREK MCGINTY EXPLORES THE POTENTIAL OF THE INTERNET AND THE NEXT GENERATION.

Derek McGinty: BELIEVE IT OR NOT...THIS IS THE INTERNET....PERHAPS FINALLY LIVING UP TO ALL THE HYPE....

McGinty asked: "you mean to tell me this thing can zoom in and you can tell that's a sub..

McGinty: THE SUB IS IN THE SAN FRANSISCO BAY HARBOR.....WHATS HAPPENING IS THIS MACHINE IS USING HYPER BANDWIDTH CONNECTION TO ACCESS A SUPERCOMPUTER....WHICH IN TURN CAN DISPLAY A BIRDSEYE VIEW...OF JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE...

Silicon Graphics Engineer Kirk Kern: "Here's l-a-x. so how high are we now. right now we're at 226 meters. Here's a 747 and you can actually make out some of the baggage handlers."

McGinty: THE ONLY LIMITATION IS WHETHER THE PICTURES ARE IN THE DATABASE....SO I HAD TROUBLE FINDING MY HOUSE FOR EXAMPLE.....BUT THIS LOOK FAMILIAR? ITS THE WOODROW WILSON BRIDGE...HMM. MUST NOT BE RUSH HOUR..

Silicon Graphics Engineer Kirk Kern: "If my current internet hook up is the size of a pencil....how big is this? its bigger than a redwood tree. Its probably anywhere from a million to a hundred million time jump over the modem that you have at your home today on your telephone."

McGinty: AND REMEMBER THIS IS JUST A COMPUTER BASICALLY MOVING AROUND OLD PICTURES AT SPEEDS TO FAST TO SEE....IN THE FUTURE...YOU'LL GET THIS DATA IN REAL TIME. SOUNDS KIND OF SCARY...BUT NOT TO THESE GUYS...

Computer expert said: "Think of the uses in real estate for instance. The internet is still in its infancy stages. applications like this will the drive the internet to new plataues...and not make people think this is big brother."

McGinty: SO WHEN CAN YOU EXPECT ONE OF THESE? ONLY A COUPLE OF YEARS AWAY...AND IN REALITY ...IT'S NOT THE COMPUTER...ITS THE CONNECTION..........

Network expert said: "You don't have to have the actual computer or the visualization engine sitting with you..you can use your ordinary pc at home..and get the support from the super computer on the network."

McGinty: THIS IS THE SUPER COMPUTER YOU NEED TO PRODUCE THOSE INCREDIBLE IMAGES...BUT SCIENTES HERE AT THE NAVAL RESEARCH LAB SAY AS SOON AS THE LOCAL BANDWIDTH GETS BIG ENOUGH..IT WILL BE JUST LIKE HAVING ONE OF THESE AT YOUR HOUSE. AT THE NAVAL RESEARCH LAB IN SOUTHWEST.
